Grunge can be summed up in three records:
Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff
The late 80s. While the UK was going Madchester crazy, some west coast yanks produced a 6 track EP that took The Stooges, Hüsker Dü, The Pixies & Dinosaur Jr and rolled them up into one big ball of ear splitting noise. Stand out track - 'In 'n' out of Grace' - contained a pre-Primal Scream 'Loaded' sample from Wild Angels. It might not be the first grunge record but it's an era defining sound.
Nirvana - Sliver
Summer 1991. Between the two album releases of Bleach and Nevermind, Nirvana hit the pinnacle of their career with 3 minutes of pure pop - wrapped up in squealing distorted guitars. From this point on it would all be downhill...
Pearl Jam - Alive
The kerching of a cash register and the sound of a genre dying on it's feet. Overblown, warbly crap. Unfortunately, grunge would shuffle on for many years before being put out of it's misery.
