I've seen Rivers Cuomo get bashed in a magazine or something about being a below average guitar player for his melodies in songs like "Undone- the Sweater Song" and "Buddy Holly". If you go lookin' up his tabs though, he can actually shred really well when he wants to, not that I don't think his simpler guitar sections sound good as well.
His retaliation was something along the lines that as lead guitarist it is not his job to show off but to lead the rest of the instruments in rhythm.
