I would say its a balanced combination of both
Do you feel that you are/can be emotionally affected by the songs you listen to? absolutely, when i work out i like to listen to loud fast paced music in order to get me motivated to do some work.

yes, a few memories... like the song that was playing when i got my first bj, or a song that was playing at a funeral for a friend.
