Yes, and that's precisely my point, however people are approaching it as if "pop" simply meant popular, and that's not the case. Its a viable music style that's independent of a music's accessability or appeal to mainstream audiences. For that matter "punk" is not necessarily synonymous with subversive, and is also a musical style which frequently has a strong pop elements to it, thus making "pop-punk" NOT an oxymoron.
