Well post rock bands right now are probably doing the best job at that.

You know you keep making it out like all new prog is the same, which its not. Theres a lot more to prog than Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree for that matter.

You really should check out progarchives, its basically the prog fans Pitchfork. Theres well over 3000 bands with their own bios and discography information, and most of them have free MP3 streams. Look around.

True that they are generally not instrumental virtuosi, but again, technical proficiency is not the aim and inventive/playful exploration is. And ultimately, I think "talent" is best kept as a measure of creative brilliance rather than technical prominence.
I'm not just talking about technical skill but also about song structure and composition. Simply coming up with an original sound is not enough for me if I don't like it. But whatever this argument is going around in circles.

On the topic of Deerhoof though, I would like to strongly recommend you to listen to Friend Opportunity because melodically that album is unbelievable. Some of the best melody writing I've heard this half of the decade.
I heard some stuff from it I think, I also heard them live and it was painful for me, I hate the guitar playing and can't stand the vocalist.
