I think the original post pretty much hits most of the big, definitive rock songs. Last year I made a "rock music in ten tracks" playlist that went like this:
Whole Lotta Shakin' (Jerry Lee Lewis)
Beautiful Delilah (Chuck Berry)
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Dylan)
Crosstown Traffic (Hendrix)
Tell Me Momma (Dylan)
The Kids Are Alright (The Who)
Pills (New York Dolls)
Oh Bondage, Up Yours! (X-Ray Spex)
Nookie (Sex Pistols)
Public Image (PIL)
...obviously stacked in favor of the harder, more confrontational tracks. I had CCR's Green River on, but I nixed it in favor of the NY Dolls track. If I had to redo it, I'd probably drop PIL in favor of a cut from Spiral Scratch and substitute Gimmie Shelter for one of the Dylan tracks, for the sake of variety.
