can't go wrong with roland, and you shouldn't have much difficulty finding an authorized dealer in your area. pretty much any music store chain will be able to hook you up.

steve's music is pretty common across the great white north and offers a better glimpse at what roland offers

R is pretty uptight about publicly releasing their prices (and browsing their website is an exercise in frustration). something to keep in mind when you're checking for a kit is that the stand and kick pedal will likely be extra purchases. also, where you mention live performances you're also going to need some sort of PA / monitor setup as well (but you can always get that at a later date).

if i remember correctly from my last visit to my local shop a 6 piece with a stand was around $1000-1200. i'm not a drummer though so i didn't really pay 'that' much attention, was more a matter of curiosity.
