Launching the whole british invasion is not something you can just shrug off, and you can't just say "someone else could have done it", because that not only dosen't matter, no other British band had the kinda appeal that The Beatles had. Yes, of course much of this is undeniable boo boo but the larger question rests on the meaning of "significance" that is to be assumed when talking about culture, or whatever. That's where the dispute lies. Were the Beatles "culturally significant" in the same way as say, Bob Dylan, or the Grateful Dead, or Jefferson Airplane, or acts such as the likes of the Fugs or Zappa? Completely different kind of significance entirely. The question is the extent of their own part in the great cultural revolution of the 1960s. Of course there were incidents here and there, but in the larger scheme of things, their influence in that particular very specific regard doesn't amount to all that much.
