So what would you say to session musicians and music teachers, many of which don't write songs?

You do have a point though, a good song is a good song, no matter how good your technical ability, or how long you've been playing.

My 14 year old son has been playing for two years, and says he wants to "learn to play by playing"
It's very rare he comes to me for technical help or guidence, and some of the stuff he's written is pretty top notch, no ultra fast solos, or complex chords yet, but just solid, well written riffs and hooks.
To say I'm pleased and proud of what he's achieved so far, with very little input from outside sources , is an understatement.
