People of the lower working class bought the ps2. The ps1 and ps2 were both 300$ at launch, and were the best selling consoles of both those generations.

Look, the Wii is a good console, it's cheap enough for lower class people like me that lean Nintendo. Because it's less advanced it's a lot easier to program for developers than say PS3. It's not Nintendos fault if third party developers only want to make sh*tty licensed and party games.
Besides I got the Wii knowing full well that the really good games would be the first and second party games, that's really all I care about.
Quality > Quantity
