grunge / alternative rock was THE mainstream about 12-15 years ago. period. it's not quite as predominant in the mainstream now but there are still a fair amount of throwbacks still trying to rock out like it's 1994 (ie: anyone associated with chad kroeger / mark tremonti). it might not be as trendy in your highschool as it was back when i was in grade 11 but thanks to nirvana, grunge rock is very much part of the mainstream history of rock music.
ps. we're not you're highschool peers and we REALLY don't care about them.
