Yeah man, that sounds like the main problem with any emerging poet/songwriter/writer/etc. The most fulfilling path I have come to know is start small, start local. Find some coffee shops, open mics, etc. A local, tangible fan base always leads to something solid. Also, start up a webpage. Something like a blog, or a writers community page where ideas can be expressed, critiqued and shared. Just make sure your boy gets his stuff copyrighted (whether it be at an agency or just mail it to yourself). With getting exposure/admirers of your work, its always hit or miss, give or take.
