Do you know where "Republican" and "Democrat" lie on the political spectrum? They're pretty much the same thing; hell, for a few years, they actually WERE. Freaky.
Not to mention that both McCain and Obama are both pretty moderate. Both parties seek to highlight their candidates differences, but usually they don't even begin to bear any relevance to the candidate's ability to govern. The social issues really bring this to light. For example, it doesn't really matter what McCain's position on abortion is, he's not going to be able to enact legislation to overturn Roe v. Wade. In reality, most of what you interpret as "huge differences" are really just ways to sell the candidate. The public's perception of a candidate matters waaaaaaaaaaay more than issues that are relevant to his presidency.
