Its an acciacatura, also known as a grace note. You play the small, struck through note very quickly just before you play the note thats full size after it.
think of it like playing a hemidemisemiquaver before a breve. YOu play one note as quickly as possible before the second. The difference is that the second note lands on its notated beat, as opposed to just after it.
