I think that "wishy washy" jangle is the key. It's not a particularly aggressive album, and it's not meant to be. The songs almost don't matter. It's the sound.
Here's one I don't quite "get":
Some of the lyrics are good (and some are questioable, and some are awful), but what really turns me off is the music (or lack thereof). I don't mind people speaking through songs, but an entire album is a bit much, especially when they sound like they're reading from cue cards at four in the morning.
