for me the whole 'going anywhere' aspect of music is a reflection of how i listen to instrumental pieces. a really good piece will take my mind somewhere, anywhere, it doesn't matter. when it comes to air's instrumentals i find the ones with more pronounced lead parts (does not need to be a virtuoso performance) to provide better experiences. their more ambient stuff doesn't really cut it for me since they usually don't go on long enough.

i'd also say the tuba on 'ce matin la' is a far more unorthodox instrument choice than the banjo on 'biological'

but you're right, it does seem as though the band made a choice to start focusing on songcraft as they've progressed. i just like their looser tracks a bit more.
