I'd say that assessment was applicable around '00 or '99, just after The Soft Bulletin was released. Yoshimi catapulted their popularity and they're one of the most popular bands nowadays.

I love the Flaming Lips I have been following them since the 80s as they are from OKC a mere 3 hours from my front door. But I was at the gym today and on one of the tvs there was they Flaming Lips on a Charmed rerun...I was shocked at this and quickly turned away...but I still love them and Mercury Rev as well who is kind of a sister band to them.
