It became a big deal because it wasn't an ordinary concept at the time. And it influenced so many movies that now, looking back, it seems more ordinary.

this review that Roger Ebert wrote of the first Star Wars movie back in 1977, I think it does a great job of showing exactly why it struck such a chord with people back then.
