i actually kind of disagree with the negativity towards 2nd hand instruments. it really depends on who you're buying from.

if you're getting it from some sketchy pawn shop that has more pipes and knives than guitars and amps you're going to get screwed. on the other hand if they've got a fully stocked room and staff who are eager to help you take your first steps into playing music then you should be fine. (there are plenty of sketch pawn shops in my town but there's one that IS legit)

if it's a private sale then find out why they're getting rid of the instrument. NEVER believe the default claim of 'i hardly ever used it'. just because it doesn't look worn down doesn't mean it's been taken care of. if they're just getting rid of the guitar because they tried and didn't like it you're greatly increasing your chances of getting a piece of crap. on the other hand if they upgraded to a new guitar and just need a little extra cash then you 'should' be safe.
