While things always look good on paper, there's no substitute for practical experience.
If the kid isn't made to feel humiliated and fully understands why he/she is being punished after all else has failed, then in my opinion, physical discipline against children is okay providing the parent is in control of the situation and the child learns an important lesson of life.
What's important here is that the child has respect for the parent(s), for the child to develop a level of self discipline as a result.
