funky monks is from '92 and flea was likely defending the inclusion of 3 ballads to their last album at the time. which is arguably the last really good album they put out to a big section of their fans (i've run into more than a few who see BSSM as their first bad album too).

if you want to play the 'quotes are timeless' game then there's interview footage of the band in the mid 80s at a european festival where they say their entire goal is to make "the nastiest / dirtiest music ever recorded". not exactly a phrase i'd use to describe much of anything post BSSM.

the albums got a cleaner crisper sound over the years because they got better recording budgets for each subsequent album.
