Actually it's gotten much better reviews than previous Sonic games, Sega are at least showing signs of improvement, so maybe they are actually learning. It got much praise for the Sonic stages and 2D elements, while most of the criticism was directed at the werehog gimmick. It's not illogical to assume that someone over at Sega might catch on to that.
I also quite liked Secret Rings.
I don't think the Sonic franchise is ever gonna die, worst case scenario is that Sega will end up sticking to just making 2D games for the handheld consoles.
Actually, that's probably what they should have done a long time ago.
