(1985)

No-holds-barred, arty, Bolshevik war-atrocity film set in Belarus where 650-odd villages were razed by the Nazis, along with the customary slaughter of their populations.
Can't be bothered with an in-depth review but needless to say it's not syrupy Hollywood toss. For some reason I was watching it with headphones on which, with the dream-like sound editing going on, was like listening to some hellish, experimental-quadrophonic 60's album. There were some really cool recurring motifs as well and symbolism I didn't quite understand (I'm sure the heron was portentous).

If anybody could recommend similar films that aren't directed by Sergei Eisenstein I'd be chuffed.
Oh yeah one thing that did nag me about the film was the treatment of the girl and the 'you had it coming' bit at the end. Found it a bit sexist. But then again this is wartime Eastern Europe, a rural and impoverished Soviet state... not Dunkin' Donuts. If you see it you'll never forget the last 20 minutes
