I'm not sure how similar it is (well it's certainly more subdued) but I actually preferred his late wife Larisa Shepitko's masterpiece "The ascent". Ruminations on life, death, human dignity, Christianity and all sorts of claustrophobic stuff also set during WWII but without all the pyrotechnics.
Incidentally, the last 20 minutes weren't what stuck with me the most with Come and see, it was the 15 or so minutes of shell-shock. One of the most impressive sequences I've ever seen...
