Incidentally, I just saw a production of Don Giovanni on Thursday. I don't think it's a "gentle" opera, but there's a lot of variety in the mood throughout. Some of it is pleasantly light and melodic but there are dark, powerful moments as well (especially the Commendatore scene). It's definitely worth checking out in any case.
