Cream were a rehash of John mayalls Bluesbreakers and The Yardbirds with two exceptional musicians added in Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. I'm not even a big stones fan but to relegate them that low in your estimation is folly in my eyes. The Stones were very influential especially in the UK and one could argue that their attituce coupled with American garage music was a building block to the explosion of hard edged Rock music that came a few years later.
