3) The Uglys
Signed to Pye in 1965, this Birmingham act was led by the marvellous Steve Gibbons. In 1965 the world was this band’s oyster with the release of two Disk Jockey favourites, It’s Alright and A Friend, but for a distributors strike at the time, this release would have gone to number one and paved the way for Ugly domination of the UK for the next four years at least, alas history is a cruel beast. Several attempts to revive the band failed in the late sixties, but there is no denying quality.
