I read it and loved it, then eventually saw the movie in 2004 and was so utterly disappointed by the translation, even though the movie itself was quite adequate. Exact same thing with V for Vendetta, the movie on its own standards was brilliantly executed, but as far as a translation of the graphic novel, forget it. I decided not to make this same mistake with The Watchmen so I have yet to read it or see it.

From what I gathered (on the LONNNG car ride home after seeing it), the movie's ending differed greatly from the graphic novel, like in a big plot changing way. I personally drank and smoked beforehand, and little of the storyline stuck with me. Then again, I'm more of a weird Japanese movie fan, and less of a Harry Star Lord-a-formers person. (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Transformers.
Meh.) Although, I wouldn't suggest you ruling it out completely... it had its graphically appealing moments.
