I guess it depends a lot on context. if I find the record boring then I notice it more & it begins to annoy me. That's pretty much what happened when I heard 2112. I didn't find the music engaging and because of that because the whole album is one concept it got in the way of things & made it more annoying.

Well to each his own buddy.
I love sci fi and fantasy themes and it's one of the things that drew me to prog.
I generally find those themes a lot more interesting than the typical rock music subject matter. I'm kinda burnt out on songs about sex, drugs and rock n roll, to tell you the truth.
Zep, AC/DC, Van Halen and GnR being exceptions.
