I just think platformers are inherently better in the 2D format. It has nothing to do with technology, you could make a 2D platformer and it still have mindblowing 3D graphics.
It's just a lot harder to make a good 3D platformer, and a lot of franchises that tried to make the transition to 3D really suffered from it. Sonic is a good example, Castlevania have also tried and failed.
