Would this work? if so, what is a cheap(ish) unit to do it, and are there any easier ways?

It'd be far easier if you had a guy dedicated to triggering your samples and playing the synth. Otherwise, you guys might have a bit of a problem staying tight on that metronome.
The drummer is going to have a hard time hearing a click track in a live scenario.
