A song being covered can be a great or a terrible thing. I guess it really depends on how the artist makes the song their own. A good example is commonly covered

That Human Drama cover is one of my favorites. It's off their album Pin-ups (yeah, they copied David Bowie), an all cover album featuring songs from Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Joy Division, Tom Waits, John Lennon, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, etc. Pretty great covers all around. Especially this one:
