That's because he was for the most part. He did have a slight relapse when he was forced to test the purity of the stuff they bought of Mikey Forrester, but it was nothing more than a hiccup really. The drug deal was a major turning point in the story because Renton (Ewan) realized that as long as he lived in the U.K. he'd never be free of Begbie, that he would eventually track him down. He saw the money as his one chance to fully escape the life that had been keeping him down his adult life. Him stealing the money was his way of burning the bridges between all of his friends, especially Begbie because he would never forgive him and thus he could never really return to Scotland. With the money he buys a one way ticket to Amsterdam and starts up a night club there and becomes moderately successful. The only thing about the ending that I didn't like was that he didn't bring Spud with him, but that was a decision that forever haunted Renton and does come up a bit in the sequel to Transpotting, Porno. He does, however, leave him his share of the money, which Spud promptly spends on his drug habit. As far as Diane is concerned, she shows up and becomes a very prominent character in Porno, which takes place about 10 years after Trainspotting.
