Yeah, The Gunslinger is more prologue than anything.
I'm liking it so far. The Drawing if the Three suffered some doldrums in the middle, but by the end of the book i was unquestionably committed to the series.
Despite the fact that King is a grossly overrated
writer, he is a magnificent storyteller. There are times when the narrative is flowing beautifully and he will just interject his own personal colloquialisms into the mix, an annoying trait of his, but I'm sure he sees it as lending to his authenticity as a writer. The occassional eyeroll or facepalm is outweighed by the complexity of the story and king's vibrant imagination.
