To clarify - I like the Grateful Dead just fine at this point ... but it took me YEARS of serious opposition and hearing bits of different records and different shows when they were playing on late-night radio or at friends' houses to get me to a point where I could find something appealing in it ...

Their existence-over-time / body-of-work is astonishing when seen as a whole ... but no casual listener could possibly see it as that ... in fact, any single album or show (let alone song) could be scene as a sort of incomplete reference to the larger body-of-work, making no sense unto itself without the larger context (although that is an extreme and probably unjustifiable point of view) ...

I would label them "challenging" mainly as there is so much to take in prior to appreciation, in addition to the cultural baggage that goes along with them ... but ultimately (for me) an enriching listen, over time
