Drunken Movie #182

For Y’ur Height only (1981)

“But are you a sexual animal?”

By the 80’s James Bond rips offs were rarer than in previous decades, however, that doesn’t mean their quality diminished by any means (Or improved depending on perspective). In this Philippine James Bond take (With the theme music throughout reminding me heavily of the original James Bond theme), Weng Weng is cast as Agent 00. What makes this rip off special is Weng Weng’s physical attributes… Particularly the fact that he is listed at the height of 3 feet. This unique combination of martial arts, midgets and women make it a marvellous effort. The opening title has it spelled ‘Y’ur’ so that wasn’t me.

In the initial scenes some bloke arrives in Manilla, only to get kidnapped. Apparently he is a doctor who produces weapons which of course cannot fall into the hands of the dastardly ‘Mr Giant’, who communicates through a mirror. The gangsters are particularly awesome with accents that change from 20s American gangster to Latino to Mexican through the movie.

The following scene Agent 00 saves a chick in his trademark white suit from a gang who are trying to kill her because she refused to become a prostitute for them. After explaining her predicament, the pair cut to the gang leaders hide out for the first confrontation scene. From there, the movie only goes up, as they pull out glorious scene after glorious scene that are only enhanced during a drunken stupor. Some particular highlights include…

1. Agent 00’s boss giving Weng Weng multiple gadgets, the scene lasting about 4 minutes too long of just the boss talking, with him occasionally commenting on Weng Weng’s patience as a listener.
2. Weng Weng’s trademark slide to attack his enemies in surprise.
3. Again, the gangsters pulling out every clichéd saying in the book (Both gangster related and non-gangster related). Their main car is also a light blue Beetle.
4. Hotel combat scene, including an amazing escape
5. The classic 80s dance scene
6. ‘You know what they say, it ain’t the size, it’s the way you use it…’ ‘But are you a sexual animal?’ ‘ Wanna get it on?’
7. Weng Weng with jetpack
8. Weng Weng vs Mr Giant

This film has reached cult status for good reason. It is probably the greatest Philippine movie of all time, I haven’t seen any others but it is obviously. Scene after classic scene, and his voice only puts it over the top.

Drunken Rating: Pretty ****ing great
