I've never understood the argument that music is unoriginal as soon as it has any discernible influence - all music is a product of what came before it and is original
because it draws from existing music in a unique way. You might as well call Brian Eno unoriginal for ripping off John Cage and minimalist art, King Crimson unoriginal for ripping off classical music, Funkadelic unoriginal for ripping off Hendrix and Hendrix unoriginal for ripping off blues artists.
And I don't see how incorporating reggae means that the Clash ripped off ska groups. If you're going to accuse the Clash of ripping off the Sex Pistols, you have to remember that the Clash did the reggae/dub + punk thing before PIL.
