I agree with mr dave that much music seems very self-centered, light and fluffy. For example, one complaint I have is that most lyrics revolve around people and their concerns (human love, infidelity, sexuality, self-introspection, wrestling with emotions, etc.). The number of songs that focus on people greatly outweighs the number that deal with other topics. I prefer songs that surprise me by offering some new viewpoint, but they rarely do this. The music itself can be mesmerizing, but usually it seems like pure auditory masturbation...and when I'm done listening to the song it fades away, leaving no lasting impact, not changing me at all. In other words, most music seems like a one night stand rather than the building of a relationship.
