To me BSSM is just a more polished/refined version of their earlier work. Kiedis is more subdued, Frusciante's play is clean and crisp, and Flea/Smith throw down some crazy awesome rhythms. But a song like 'Fight Like a Brave' would have been a huge hit if it had been recorded during BSSM.

Plus you gotta throw in one of the greatest ballads of all-time, 'Under the Bridge', and a couple of other slow songs...
