I downloaded a comp some label released in 1977 that had The Ramones and The Dead Boys on it that was called New Wave. I hardly considered either of those bands new wave, and certainly not more so than the Stranglers. I think at the time anyone that was a bit more on the experimental, shying away from the three chord song structure was labelled a new wave band.

The Ramones New Wave!!! I always thought they were considered the first real punk band!!! The 3 minute song, the leather jackets, singing about sniffing glue and beating up people with baseball bats etc. Admittedly all in a cartoony and humourous way as opposed to the anarchy driven aggression of their UK counterparts.
