I agree. Powerslave is a good album but the live versions on live after death far outshine it I think. TNOTB is the breakthrough album but there is filler. On POM they really got heavy I think whereas Powerslave' is a little too polished for me, although the album cover is still one of my faves.
As for the guitar sound you mentioned I think that the final track is a great example of this. Love that riff.
Still the quintessential Metal band and still faithful to their roots.
