Super Metroid is one of the best SNES games period. And I wouldn't call it just a mindless distraction because unlike a lot of platformer games you can't just zip through it in 10 or 20 minutes even if you're good. It requires a sh*tload of time and patience.
But I love it, it's one of those games that dosen't spell anything out for you, a big part of the fun is figuring out what you're supposed to do and exploring the environment, (one thing I love about adventure games. I agree that SNES games are awkward on a keyboard.
Also, if you're using ZNES your games are saved automatically, but to actually save data in the game all you have to do is get in your spaceship, it will ask you if you want to save your game, unlike most emulators you don't have to create a file to save that data.
