What's lame about it? I think it's a perfectly valid point.
Since video games are interactive, I think some of that interactivity should come from deciding what the story is yourself.
I did that with a lot of old games. Mario and Sonic characters didn't have complex backstories, so I would often come up with my own backstories for characters, that in itself is fun to do.

This is why RPGs and Zelda style games tend to have the best storylines, because the story is so tied into the actual gameplay, it enhances it rather than distract from it which is obviously what a good video game story should do.
