There's a bus lockout in Auckland at the moment. NZ Bus' employees have been unhappy with their working conditions and pay for a while now, and have adopted a work-to-rule strategy. The company's response to that was to suspend all bus services because they claim they can't meet schedules... a pretty poor move which only makes everyone suffer. If they paid their workers more than peanuts, none of this would be happening. I'd rather have late buses that no buses at all.
Between Wednesday and Friday, most people in my class have either not gone into uni or have remained stranded in town, relying on whoever has a car to get around. I stayed at mates' places both nights.
There's no sign of it letting up either... the last strike (a few years ago before I moved here) apparently lasted 2 weeks. It's amazing how something like this can absolutely cripple a city.
