Everyone reads
everywhere that Tolkien got his idea from this battle or that war or what have you. When the truth is that no evidence points to the fact that he specifically derived the idea from anywhere but the fact that he made it up to fill in the gaps of England's ancient history (as he studied ancient history) and as a fiction to place the many languages that he made up (he also studied philology). All works of fiction are mimesis, whether the writer knows it or not, but to be honest I get a bit sick of people obsessing over where the author 'got the idea' from or what it is supposed to mimic...
