I hate it when people obsess over who "stole whose idea".
Tolkien and Lucas both took tons of different ideas from many different sources, but they made them into something entirely new, which is what matters.
Star Wars was brilliant in how it took so many different elements of popular culture and mixed it together.
Tolkien fantasy, Kurosawa, Flash Gordon, Westerns, WWII, Comic books, Movie serials, Greek tragedy, Ancient mythology.
The influences Lucas took inspiration from were all over the map.
Fun facts. C-3PO is meant to be a male version of the robot from Metropolis. And Darth Vader is greatly inspired by Doctor Doom.
