The catholic church is more a unified system. There is no protestant equivalent so how conservative a protestant is becomes completely relative.
Norway is not a particularly religious country, protestantism is the thing here, but less than half our population consider themselves christian, at least according to the last numbers I saw. The majority of those who consider themselves christian have a very relaxed relationship with their faith.
On average over here, catholics are seen as more conservative I guess. At least until you enter some kind of protestant sect community. We have some of those, but of course you have more of them in America.
