Slipknot is not thrash, not by a mile. You'd need a frigging trebuchet to launch them into the outskirts of thrash territory.
They're nu metal. They have all the standard nu metal traits. The guitars are standard groove metal. They make use of variations of being loud/quiet like the Pixies. The vocals alternate between melodic and screamed. They even have the hip hop element.
