As far as black metal goes, I've always dug Dimmu Borgir and early Cradle of Filth. I've listen to a bit of Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth and 1349 and I like what I've heard so far. Another band that I've discovered recently is an American Black Metal band from Washington state: Wolves in the Throne Room. Really good stuff. Reminds me of some of the first BM I came into contact with, but I didn't have the ear for it at the time.

What I find interesting is how a couple of the earliest Black Metal bands: Burzum and Ulver have taken such a dramatic turn as far as their sound goes, and are delving more into slow, dirge-like ambient pieces, and even had some songs with elements of trip-hop and jazz involved.

I've been interested in checking out some Bathory. Anybody got any recommendations for albums?
