if you don't have a sound driver installed then no application is going to be able to tell you what sort of sound device you have.
you need to physically open it up and take a look. unless you have the original documentation that came with your pc. if it's built onto the motherboard it would be in the manual. if it's a factory built pc with an actual soundcard then find out the make and model of the pc and the sound device should be listed in the specifications for that model.
once you know what sort of sound device you have a google search should hook you up with the drivers necessary to get it working.
